Director of Procurement - Drayage
Confidential - National Drayage & Transload Provider
Remote (U.S.) | $80,000 - $100,000+
About This Role
An established drayage and intermodal services provider is hiring a remote Director of Procurement to own carrier and capacity sourcing across its network. This is a senior, strategic procurement role for someone who knows how drayage capacity is bought — owner-operators, asset carriers, rail ramps, and chassis — and can turn that knowledge into reliable, cost-effective coverage.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own the end-to-end procurement strategy for drayage capacity: carrier sourcing, onboarding, rate negotiation, and ongoing performance management
- Build and maintain relationships with owner-operators, asset-based drayage carriers, chassis providers, and rail ramps across key U.S. port markets
- Negotiate rate agreements and master contracts that protect margin while ensuring service reliability
- Develop and manage a preferred-carrier network with clear scorecards for on-time performance, compliance, and cost
- Partner with operations and dispatch to forecast capacity needs by lane and market, and secure coverage ahead of demand
- Manage chassis pools, per-diem, and accessorial costs to control total landed drayage cost
- Build procurement processes, data, and reporting that give leadership visibility into spend, rate trends, and carrier performance
- Drive vendor compliance, insurance, and safety standards across the carrier base
QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of procurement, carrier sourcing, or capacity-buying experience in drayage, intermodal, or container logistics
- Strong understanding of port operations, rail ramps, chassis, per-diem, and drayage cost structure
- Proven track record negotiating carrier rates and building reliable capacity networks
- Existing relationships with drayage carriers and owner-operators in major U.S. port markets
- Data-driven approach to carrier scorecarding, rate benchmarking, and spend management
- Comfort with TMS and procurement tooling, and the discipline to build process where little exists
- Ability to work independently in a fully remote role while partnering closely with operations
COMPENSATION
- Base salary $80,000 to $100,000 depending on experience
- Fully remote (U.S.) with occasional travel to key port markets as needed
- Opportunity to build and own the procurement function at a growing, established drayage operator
